So you have planned a photoshoot, congrats! Whether it is a new headshot, a branding shoot or a family photoshoot there are some things that every photographer wishes you knew, and I’m about to spill the tea. Here are 5 things your photographer wishes you knew going into the photoshoot:
1. Planning is key. Plan your outfit(s) in advance in case there is some last minute shopping needed. Try things on to make sure they fit nicely. If it’s a family session, coordinate outfits based on similar colors so you are not stressed the day of the photo shoot. Go over location and timing with your photographer and maybe plan an alternate “rain-day” in case of bad weather.
2. The first 10 minutes will probably be uncomfortable. Real people do NOT know how to naturally pose or look picture perfect. This is where your photographer should guide you from exactly how to stand, down to what to do with your hands. If there are any qualms your photographer should know about (such as you hate your profile), tell them ahead of time. Your photographer wants you to love your images as much as you do!
3. Work with a photographer that you are comfortable with. I hear all the time from clients who have had a “horrible experience” with another photographer because of lack of communication or guidance. Don’t be afraid to ask questions before hiring a photographer to make sure they are going to make you 100% comfortable.
4. Perfection is overrated. While you want to look amazing and put together in your photos, you should still look like YOU (REALLY good photos of you). For family photos, keep it fun and light. Whenever you’re talking to your kids about the session, make sure you have a relaxed, positive attitude. The best way to make sure you’ll get genuine smiles out of the kids is to actually be having a super fun day with them! Candids are amazing to capture true joy.
5. Have something fun planned after the session. For my branding clients, I always recommend planning a date-night or dinner out the night after the session. Your hair and makeup will be done already, so treat yourself after your hard work. For family sessions, don’t be shy to “bribe” the kiddos with a fun treat or event after the session. It will do wonders to mention the treat during the photo shoot to get kids to cooperate for 10 more minutes.
Overall, try to relax and remember that your photographer has done this before. They are not there to just press a button, they are there to guide you so you look your best. By following these tips your photographer wants you to know, you’ll have beautiful photos you’ll be proud of!
