Every January I look back at the year before and do a business recap on everything that happened. This January is a doozy, 2020 – what a year! As the year began I was on point to have my best fiscal year yet for Lisa Kay Photography……and then shit hit the fan.
I won’t lie, there was a three-week downward spiral when every day I was getting emails and calls with the news of events, weddings and photo shoots cancelled or postponed. My business depends on me being face to face with people and I felt extremely helpless.
But….slowly but surely things got better. As soon as it was allowable I began doing “front porch sessions.” These sessions gave me hope and seeing the joy I could bring people during quarantine was so good for my soul!
Front Porch Sessions:
With so many things outside of my control, the one thing I could control was improving my photography skills. Branding photography has been on my radar for a couple years but I just didn’t have the time to truly get into it…until now. I signed up for a Mastering Personal Branding Photography course by the talented Angie McPherson and it was amazing! Using the program, I began photographing entrepreneurs and business owners who needed images for their website, social media and advertising. Being able to help other small business owners is my new passion and it’s amazing!

I also did a record number of socially-distanced safe headshot sessions this year! I think people realized as they logged into Zoom everyday that their profile photo matters and that their LinkedIn photo better be professional.
Chicago Headshot Photography:
Last, but certainly not least, love prevailed! Couples pivoted and got married in new and creative ways. One couple rented a Frank Lloyd Wright home in Michigan for their small wedding. Three couples turned their parents back yards into gorgeous home weddings. City Hall weddings became not an option, but sometimes a necessity as couples realized it’s about the marriage and not the wedding.

With all the negatives that happened in 2020, this blog post has proven that there were also so many positives! Wishing everyone a healthy, happy and prosperous 2021!
